Screen-region OCR, on your device

Screen text.
Clipboard text.

Use the default shortcut Cmd/Ctrl + Alt + X or the tray menu, drag over a region, and ClipOCR copies the recognised text. OCR runs on your device. The app lives in your menu bar or system tray—not a main window.

The path

Select. Recognise. Paste.

  1. 01

    Trigger a capture

Use the hotkey or the tray menu. On Wayland, bind clipocr --capture-ocr in your compositor instead of relying on the in-app hotkey.

  2. 02

    Drag across the text

macOS uses its system region picker; wlroots/Wayland uses slurp and grim; Windows uses a native crosshair overlay.

  3. 03

    Paste what was recognised

Apple Vision, Tesseract or Windows.Media.Ocr processes the region locally. Recognised text is copied to your clipboard, ready to paste.

Network & privacy

Your text stays here.

Recognised text never leaves the device. There are no accounts, cloud OCR, capture history or analytics.

Optional update checks

ClipOCR's only network activity is an optional update check, starting with a GET to https://github.com/cortexuvula/clip-ocr/releases/latest/download/latest.json and following HTTPS redirects only within GitHub and GitHub release-asset hosts. Checks happen when you ask or opt in to automatic checks. Automatic checks are off by default: daily after a successful check, with 6/12/24-hour backoff after failures (longer if GitHub requests it). Checks are deferred while a capture is active.

The GET carries no app version, platform or install identifier. GitHub sees your IP address. This is a check, not an automatic update: the app does not download, install or restart anything. If a newer version is available, you can open its GitHub release page.

As with any clipboard app, OS clipboard sync or clipboard managers you enable may retain or sync copied text; ClipOCR does not control them.

Compatibility

Built for your desktop.

Three capture paths. Three local OCR engines. Check the setup notes before downloading.

01 / DESKTOP

macOS 12+

Capture
System region picker (screencapture)
OCR
Apple Vision, in-process (objc2)

Requires Screen Recording permission. Builds are signed but not notarized; Gatekeeper may warn on first launch.

02 / DESKTOP

Windows 11

Capture
Native crosshair drag-to-select overlay, per monitor
OCR
Windows.Media.Ocr (WinRT)

Requires the WebView2 runtime used by Tauri. The overlay cannot draw above elevated/admin apps. A drag cannot span monitors; it stays on the monitor where it began. A brief console flash at login is possible.

03 / DESKTOP

Linux wlroots / Wayland

Capture
slurp + grim
OCR
Tesseract (tesseract-rs)

Hyprland, Sway and River. Install tesseract and the language data you need, plus grim and slurp. The in-app hotkey cannot fire on Wayland: bind clipocr --capture-ocr in the compositor. GNOME/KDE Wayland are not claimed.
